El Paso did you Know that Hispanics Age Slower?

El Paso Health Insurance Latinos Aging Slower

Researchers discover that Hispanics Age slower than other groups, women are 2.4 years younger when compared to women of other groups of the same age

Background of the Study

In spite of having higher rates of Type 2 Diabetes and other medical conditions, American Hispanics age slower in average than other groups.  According to professor of anthropology Michael Gurven, PhD, from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and professor Steve Horvath, PhD from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) the DNA of the Hispanic population seems to age slower than other groups. The researchers analyzed the blood samples of more than 6,000 people from different races to come to this conclusion.

Because of the missing information on why Hispanics age slower, researchers called this effect the “Hispanic Paradox”. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the average life expectancy for Hispanics in the United States is 82 years, compared to 79 years old for non-Hispanic groups. Researchers hope this study can help them better understand the aging process for all different groups.

Explanation of Findings

One possible explanation may be the strong family ties found in Hispanic groups, that help them improve their social environment and reduce psychological stress. The authors conclude that Hispanic longevity is more like to relate to their DNA being modified by how they live, stress, diet and other factors. Therefore, it is not about the genes you have when you are born. This is why Hispanics should continue to take care of themselves as this is not a free pass on longevity.

What else affects longevity?

It is worth mentioning that other studies from Harvard University have proven that people enrolled in Health Insurance live longer lives that people that don’t. For older people having Health Insurance is of key importance, for individuals 65 years old and older they should enroll in a Medicare Plan. The 2017 El Paso Medicare Advantage Plans offer the same benefits as a Medicare Original Plan but also many extra benefits that Medicare Original does not cover.
